Joey Dean

Artist member since 2019
Hamilton , Ontario

Joey Dean is a multidisciplinary artist and writer—from creating autobiographical comics, zines, graphic design, LGBTQ+ merchandise design, to writing visionary fiction, poetry and advice articles—his work has a clear focus on storytelling and retelling experiences in accessible ways. Joey strives to provide representation for other Transgender and gender non-conforming people through his art practice, writing and his apparel shop, Toadstool’s Gift Shop. Joey’s shop produces magical feminist stickers, zines, pins, patches and other apparel inspired by Gay Love, witchcraft and his own experiences with being transgender and mental health. He has been an artist vendor well known in the Hamilton area, as well as Guelph and as and London since in 2016. Joey Dean has an Honours Art & Design College Certificate where he studied Graphic Design & Print Production as well as 3 years experience in Environmental Engineering & Technology, where he had the opportunity to gain leadership experience through Mohawk College’s Leadership Camp, volunteering on campus and tutoring other students in arithmetic, organic chemistry and physics. His traditional artistic training is self-taught in combination with studying various silkscreen printing techniques at the Dundas Valley School of Art. Dean’s current work consists of his private comic commissions, designing for CSC while creating his own comics on JoeyDean(dot)ca.
